New software, bi-flex cuffs and new electrodes

  • The device has inbuilt bluetooth wireless technology that allows collection of data without the need to constantly hold a computer.
  • An easy to use software programme that enables data to be collected and fine-tuned.
  • No lithium battery or rechargeable battery but a normal AA battery that you can find everywhere and replace anywhere.
  • It has been designed in such a way that patients can easy place the device with one hand because a heel sensor and external cables are not required.

Product operations

The WalkAide can effectively counteract foot drop by producing dorsiflexion of the ankle during the swing phase of the gait. The small device attaches to the leg, just below the knee, near the head of the fibula. During a gait cycle, the WalkAide stimulates the common peroneal nerve, which innervates the tibialis anterior and other muscles that produce dorsiflexion and erversion of the foot.

Q&A

Can I retrieve specific data again?

The WalkAide contains a type of blackbox from which all data can be downloaded, such as the length of time the patient has worn the aid, how many stimulations they received, whether the walkaide has skipped any stimulations etc.

Can wearing the aid cause pain?

Initially, it may take adjustment and can be somewhat sensitive. Sometimes it is necessary to gradually adjust to the WalkAide and therefore a gradual increase in wearing the WalkAide. This is especially the case with chronic patients. Patients that are very active can move faster through the programme.

Are there any contra-indications?

In a strict sense, there are no contra-indications. However, one should keep a careful eye on the following:

  • Always ask if the patient has a pacemaker. This is not a problem if it concerns a fixed rate pacemaker.
  • If it is a demand pacemaker, then the WalkAide is not allowed!
  • Patients with epilepsy
  • Be careful with neurotic diabetes patients. They do not feel the strength of the stimulation!
  • Be careful with very sensitive patients = dysesthetic pain
  • T12 – L1 injuries: the aid may not work.
  • Legs that have just been depilated: do not attach the WalkAide immediately. Open hair pores can be irritating.
